25.05.08 The Champions are crowned!
Snow conditions were good and the sun was out when the final day of the SBMC went down with an enthusiastic crowd on site. Thousands of online viewers also watched the spectacular show live via national swedish television, SVT Play.
Last year’s women’s snowboard champion, Iina Kurunsaari from Finland, defended her title with solid riding and large, controlled jumps. Tova Nejne (Sweden) once again had to settle for second place, ahead of Claudia Bings from Germany.
In the men’s snowboard category, the leader from the first two days managed to hold his position. This year’s champion is Jonas Nordenström, just ahead of last year’s winner Arvid Gustafsson. Third place went to Collin Viklund, only 16 years old, who impressed with his excellent technique that made riding the Nordalsbranten look easy.
The telemark class had the fewest participants, but the athletes were all the more impressive. As in many previous years, Erik Nordin claimed the title. He was challenged by Iisko Kuusisto from Finland in second place, followed by Oscar Ahlqvist.
The women’s ski class was a close battle over all three competition days between last year’s winner Maria Rydén and challenger Lovisa Rosengren. After a demanding run in the Nordalsbranten, Lovisa Rosengren emerged victorious by the narrowest margin. Maria, always at high speed, was overtaken by Lovisa, who chose a more challenging line and landed a double jump in the cliff section. The day’s biggest jump came from local Riksgränsen skier Selma Palmkvist, who earned a well-deserved third place.
In the men’s ski class, all three competition days were a stunning showcase by world-class skier Max Palm. Max chose extremely difficult terrain where any mistake would have serious consequences. Nevertheless, he managed to complete the biggest jump of the day—a backflip over the cliffs in Nordalsbranten—with full control. Last year’s champion Edvin Olsson, competing for the first time since an injury earlier this winter, took second place with his signature style, high speed and flawless technique. William Larsson, always among the top in Riksgränsen, finished third after a very impressive run in Nordalsbranten. Check out all the results:
